Education Dialogue 2

 

Scenario: Mrs. Perera a Sinhalese-speaking woman visiting the office of Mr. Stevens who teaches her son Andrew maths. Mr. Stevens is concerned about Andrew’s grades dropping.

Teacher: Hi Mrs. Perera. How is it going? I'm Mr. Stevens Andrew’s math teacher. 

Mother: අහ් ආයුබෝවන් ස්ටේවන් මහත්මයා, කරුණාකර මට සමාවෙන්න. අපේ අවන්හල පසුගිය දවස්වල ගොඩක් කාර්යබහුල වුණා. පසුගිය සතියෙදී සිදුවීමකුත් උනා. අපිට ඒ ගැන සැලකිලිමත් වෙන්න වුණා. ඒ නිසා අද වන තුරු මට ඔබව මුණ ගැසීමට නොහැකි වුණා. 

Teacher: That's quite all right, please take a seat. 

Mother: ස්තුතියි. ඔබට මාව බැහැ දකින්න ඕන කිව්වේ ඇන්ඩ්රු සම්බන්ධයෙන් කතා කරන්න කියලා මම හිතන්නේ.

Teacher: Yes, we are concerned about his behavior in class. A few times I have caught him dropping during algebra. And another day one of the other teachers have seen him stay by himself during lunch. So have you noticed any major changes in him lately? 

Mother: නැහැ, මම හිතන්නේ නැහැ එහෙම දෙයක්. සාමාන්‍ය දින චර්යාවම තමයි. පාසල් යනවා, තූර්යවාදන කණ්ඩායමේ පුහුණුවීම්, ව්‍යායාම් කිරීම්. සෙනසුරාදට ඔහුට සිංහල භාෂා පාසල තියෙනවා. දෙවන භාෂාවක් විදියට ඔහු වික්ටෝරියානු භාෂා පාසලේ සිංහල හදාරනවා. 

Teacher: I see. We think that maybe he is not getting enough sleep. Kids at his age need to have their downtime. Otherwise, they can't perform well at school. 

Mother: ඔව් ඒක හරි. මට තේරෙන්නේ නැහැ ඔහුට මොකක් වෙලාද කියලා. දහම් පාසල් ගිහින් ආවට පස්සේ ඔහුට ඉරිදට විවේකයක් තියනවා. එදාට පාඩම් වැඩ කරන්න කියලා අපි ඔහුට බල කරන්නෙ නැහැ. 

Teacher: How about breakfast? is he having a good meal before he goes to school in the morning? 

Mother: ඔව්, අනිවාර්යෙන්ම. අපි ඔහුට උදෑසන ධාන්‍යමය ආහාර මුං ඇට, කඩල වගේ දේවල් දෙනවා. සමහර දවස් වලට කැඳ වීදුරුවකුත් බොන්න දෙනව. මට හිතෙන්නෙ ප්‍රශ්නෙ ඔහුට අනිත් අය එක්ක අදහස් හුවමාරු කර ගැනීමේ අසීරුතාවක් තියෙනවා. ඔහු වැඩියෙන් කතා නොකරන චරිතයක්. 

Teacher: Yes, I understand. His grades are also dropping in maths which is a shame because he used to be at the top of his class. 

Mother: කනගාටු වෙන්න එපා ස්ටේවන්  මහත්තයා. ඔහු කලින්ට වඩා ගොඩක් වැඩ කරන බවට මම වගබලාගන්නම්. අමතර පන්ති කරන ගුරුවරයෙක් ගෙන්න ගන්න පවා අපි හිතනවා. ඔබ  දන්න හිතවතෙක් ඉන්නවද එහෙම ඔබට නිර්දේශ කරන්න පුළුවන්? 

Teacher: I'm sure admin would be able to help you they are just down the hall. 

Mother: ඔබට ස්තුති ස්ටේවන් මහත්තයා. එක මම ගොඩක් අගය කරනවා. ඇන්ඩ්රු ඔහු සිටි තත්වෙට නැවත ගේන්න මම මගේ උපරිමය කරන්නම්. ඔබටත් ඔබේ පවුලේ අයටත් සුභ පාස්කු මංගල්‍යයක් වේවා කියලා මම ප්‍රාර්ථනා කරනවා.

Teacher: No worries Mrs. Perera. It was great meeting you and I hope to see you again sometime soon. See you. 

Mother: සී යූ මිස්ටර් ස්ටේවන්.
